Well coverage in the frontier Møre and Vøring basins is sparse, especially in the western areas. However, the presence of an active hydrocarbon system in the area has been demonstrated by a number of gas and oil discoveries in Cretaceous and Palaeocene sandstones.
Towards the west, these plays are separated from the oceanic crust by a thick zone of Tertiary lavas. With its excellent depth penetration and sensitivity to large resistive structures, 3D magnetotelluric (MT) data is ideally suited to improve the understanding of these basalt layers and the underlying geology.
