When exploration advances forward in mature regions, the search for stratigraphic traps will increase, since most structural closures will have been mapped and eventually drilled. A stratigraphic trap’s typical main risk is seal quality, as this factor cannot be evaluated from seismic data with great confidence. Also, seismic DHI’s may be challenging for stratigraphic traps, so the absence of seismic DHI’s should not rule out the possibility of hydrocarbons.

In this setting, CSEM can help de-risk existing prospects as well as define new prospects previously overlooked on seismic data.
