Norwegian Petroleum Society recognises EMGS founders
The Norwegian Petroleum Society gave its 17th Geophysical Award to EMGS founders Terje Eidesmo, Svein Ellingsrud and Ståle Johansen at its biennial seminar in Kristiansand, 10 March, 2008. The award recognises people associated with Norwegian companies for high-quality, professional work in petroleum geophysics.
Torgeir Stardal of Shell chaired the four-person award committee. Stardal acknowledged the contributions of previous winners, but added that the three men from EMGS had taken Norwegian geophysics a step further. He said, “They have broadened geophysics beyond seismic… with the birth of electromagnetic technology… and delivered an outstanding contribution to geosciences and to the petroleum industry in Norway and globally.”
Ståle Johansen received the award on behalf of the three EMGS founders. Later Eidesmo reflected: “Our EM-imaging surveys are performed all over the world and we have, perhaps, been better known internationally. To be recognised by the Norwegian geophysical community is very special for all three of us and for our company.”
Eidesmo, Ellingsrud and Johansen received NOK 20,000 and an engraved anorthosite stone. The latter will join the companies other accolades, which include the Virgil Kaufmann Gold Medal and the Hart's E&P meritorious award for engineering innovation.
