Geophysical surveys in Troms II

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) has today, 24 October 2006, entered into a contract with the company EMGS(ElectroMagnetic GeoServices AS) for electromagnetic surveys in Troms II in Lofoten.
The objective of the surveys is to add to our knowledge on a complex geological area. The results will form a useful basis for the further mapping of the area.
In the Storting Report No. 8 (2005-2006); The integrated management of the marine environment of the Barents Sea and the sea areas off the Lofoten islands (the management plan), the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate has been instructed to gather and interpret geological and geophysical data to increase the knowledge on potential oil and gas deposits in the area. This project is one of several surveys which the NPD will carry out in the implementation of this plan.
Electromagnetic surveys are conducted by several receivers being dropped along a line on the ocean floor at approximately one kilometre intervals. A low-frequency electromagnetic source is then towed over the receivers. The receivers record signals from the source several kilometres down into the subsurface. The interpretation of the signals will be used in the further evaluation of the petroleum potential in the area.
We expect the EMGS project to be completed by 1 December 2006. More details about the surveys is available here.
